Level 1 vs. Level 2
Level 1 is the cord that came in the trunk. It plugs into an ordinary 120-volt outlet and adds roughly three to five miles of range per hour. Plugged in overnight that is maybe 40 miles — fine if you drive locally around Queens and never run the battery down, painful for anything else.
Level 2 is a dedicated 240-volt circuit, typically 40 to 60 amps, feeding a wall-mounted charger. That delivers roughly 25 to 40 miles of range per hour, so any realistic daily drive is replaced while you sleep. It is the practical choice for a home with somewhere to park, and it is the version that requires real electrical work: a dedicated breaker, correctly sized conductors, conduit, and a permitted installation.
There is also Level 3 DC fast charging. That is commercial infrastructure with three-phase service behind it — it does not go on a house.
Why Queens is well suited to home charging
Home charging only works if you have a dedicated place to park, and Queens has more of that than anywhere else in the city. Detached and semi-detached homes with driveways and garages run through Bayside, Forest Hills, Rego Park, Howard Beach, Ozone Park, and out along the eastern edge of the borough. A driveway means a short conduit run from the panel to an exterior wall; a garage often means an even shorter one with the panel already nearby.
Two-family homes are common here too, and they raise a fair question about who pays for the electricity. We can feed the charger from a specific unit's panel or from house service depending on how you want it accounted for — worth deciding before the conduit goes in rather than after.
Do you need a panel upgrade first?
Not always — and this is where a lot of quotes get inflated. Adding a 48-amp charger does not automatically mean your service is overloaded, because your house never runs every appliance at once. The correct answer comes from a load calculation: we total your existing demand, add the charger, and compare it against your actual service capacity.
Plenty of Queens homes on 100-amp service can take a Level 2 charger as-is, especially at a lower amperage setting. Where there is no headroom, there are still options short of a full upgrade — dialing the charger down to a rate that still covers your daily driving, adding a subpanel, or using a load-management device that pauses charging when the house draws heavily. If none of those work, then a panel or service upgrade comes first, and we will explain exactly why before you commit.
Permits and code
A Level 2 charger is a new permitted circuit in New York City. The installation is filed with the Department of Buildings and closed out with an electrical inspection, and the work has to satisfy NYC Electrical Code requirements around conductor sizing, GFCI protection, disconnecting means, and outdoor-rated enclosures where the unit is exposed to weather. We handle the filing and the inspection scheduling as part of the job.
Keeping it permitted also protects the rebate and incentive paperwork. Utility and state EV charging programs generally require documentation of a compliant, inspected installation.
What it costs
Pricing depends on three things: the distance from your panel to where the charger is going, whether the run is exposed or has to be concealed, and whether your service has headroom. A short run in an attached garage with room in the panel is the low end. A long exterior run to a detached garage, trenching, or a panel that needs a subpanel added sits well above it — and a full service upgrade is a separate, larger project on top.
We quote the installation as a fixed price after seeing the panel and the intended charger location, with the charger unit itself either supplied by you or included. No hourly surprises.
