What a panel upgrade actually is

Your electrical panel is the box where the power coming into the house gets split into the individual circuits that feed your outlets, lights, and appliances. Each circuit sits behind a breaker sized to protect the wire behind it. A panel upgrade means replacing that entire box — enclosure, bus bars, breakers, grounding, and every termination — with a modern panel that has the capacity and the spare spaces your house needs now.

It is not the same as swapping a single bad breaker, and it is not a cosmetic job. The bus bar behind the breakers is the part that quietly degrades: decades of heat cycling loosen connections, and a loose connection under load makes more heat, which loosens it further. Why Queens homes need them more than most

A large share of the housing stock here predates the electrical demands of a modern household by fifty years or more. Pre-war homes in Astoria, Ridgewood, and Jackson Heights were wired for a few lamps and a radio. Fuse boxes and early split-bus panels still turn up regularly, along with ungrounded two-prong receptacles and cloth-jacketed conductors that have gone brittle at the terminations.

Then the demand side changed. Central air, an induction or electric range, an electric dryer, a finished basement, a mini-split in every bedroom, a home office, and now an EV in the driveway. Two-family houses stack that demand twice over on a single service. When a 100-amp service tries to carry all of it you get the familiar symptoms: breakers that trip on hot afternoons, lights that dip when the compressor kicks in, and a panel with no room left to add anything.

Panel upgrade vs. service upgrade

These get used interchangeably and they are not the same job. A panel upgrade replaces the breaker box inside your home while the incoming service stays as it is. It buys you modern breakers, proper grounding and bonding, AFCI and GFCI protection where code requires it, and spare spaces for future circuits.

A service upgrade increases the total amperage coming into the property from Con Edison. That means the service entrance conductors, the meter pan, and the utility connection all change too — a bigger scope that requires utility coordination and a longer schedule. If your panel is full but the service is adequate, you need the first. If the load calculation exceeds the service itself, you need the second.

When 100 amps is no longer enough

We size the service off a load calculation, not a rule of thumb, but the pattern is consistent. Go to 200 amps when you have central air plus electric cooking or an electric dryer; when you are finishing a basement or adding a rental unit; when you want a Level 2 EV charger and the existing service has no headroom; or when the panel is physically out of spaces and someone has already started doubling up breakers.

If you are staying with gas heat and gas cooking and have no plans to add major loads, 100 amps can still be perfectly adequate — and we will tell you that rather than sell you an upgrade you do not need.

Permits and Con Edison coordination

Panel work in New York City is permitted work. The filing goes to the Department of Buildings before the job starts and the work is signed off by an electrical inspection afterward. We handle that end of it, including the scheduling. Skipping the permit is the shortcut that comes back later — unpermitted electrical work is exactly what turns up in a title search or an insurance review.

Where the amperage of the service itself changes, Con Edison has to be brought in to disconnect, reconnect, and in some cases replace equipment on their side of the meter. We initiate that coordination and sequence our work around their appointment so you are not left without power waiting on two schedules to line up.

What the process looks like

2. Written scope and DOB filing

3. Installation day

Power comes down, the old panel and feeders come out, the new panel and grounding electrode system go in, and every branch circuit is re-landed, tested, and labeled.

4. Inspection and close-out
